Strengthening Relationships

Strong relationships are key to emotional well-being, as well as couples counseling and family therapy. This can help you build healthier connections with the people who matter most. Whether you're experiencing communication issues, navigating relationship challenges, or dealing with conflict, this therapeutic work will enhance understanding, improve communication, and resolve issues.

Couples Counseling

Relationships go through ups and downs, and sometimes you need extra support to help you and your partner reconnect. The couples counseling services at Newhouse Psychotherapy provides a safe and supportive environment to work through your relationship challenges by offering strategies to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen the emotional bond between partners.

Newhouse Psychotherapy has a different approach to Couples Therapy. After the initial meeting with the couple, we schedule meetings with each partner individually to discusses some of their communication or frustration issues. Then, back together, they discuss how they are doing. It’s different but freeing. No shame and blame. The patient in this case is the Couples Partnership.

Then we move onto, is it better to win or to love? If you look at the number of pointless arguments you've had with your partner, you might have to look at what is winning REALLY. No two people are really alike. After the Honeymoon phase is over in a relationship; and you will discover your partner might not always see things the way you do. Is it better to win then love? A wise man once told me, “Love is when you see your partner’s desire as important as your desire but not more and not less.” This may not be the way you saw couples growing up. If you can’t hear what your partner is saying or if they can’t hear you, it could lead to the trap of ‘shame and blame’. There’s no winning and no love there.

Whether you're dealing with communication issues, financial, infidelity, trust concerns, child-rearing or life transitions, our therapeutic work is to help you:

  • Enhance communication skills
  • Manage conflicts in a healthy way
  • Rebuild trust and intimacy
  • Navigate major life changes together (e.g., marriage, parenthood, financial stress)

Through couples counseling, we guide you toward a deeper understanding of each other, fostering a stronger connection and a healthier relationship dynamic.

Family Counseling

Family relationships are complex, and sometimes external support is needed to navigate challenges and restore harmony. Family therapy services focus on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and helping families better understand each other's perspectives. There is sibling, grandparents and parents’ types of issues. Respect, interaction, and encouragement are important here, rather than immediate explosive reactions. Parents are better role models when they explore their expectations in addition to their own behavior. Developing a self-confident child sets their behavior in a solid framework that grows to maturity. By understanding the reasons (biological and emotional) for their behavior, you can enable your children to become responsible and independent adults. Recognizing and helping the expression of your child’s feelings is essential in the childhood developmental process. Adolescence is, more often than not, a bumpy ride for both parent and child. Together we address this difficult passage to adulthood. This includes families of all sizes, from parents and children to extended family members, to address issues such as:

  • Parenting challenges and strategies
  • Communication barriers between family members
  • Blended family dynamics
  • Coping with grief, trauma, or loss
  • Managing family stress and conflict

By participating in family therapy, your family can strengthen bonds, improve communication, and create a more supportive, understanding home environment.
